Apollo vs live search queries: similar hit rate, very different reliability

Enriching the wrong companies is the most expensive mistake in niche B2B outbound.

PreGTM serves as the quality filter before enrichment. It discovers candidate companies, crawls their websites, and keeps only confirmed fits.

We tested two discovery sources for the initial find: live Google search queries and Apollo's company database. We evaluated both on the same target profile.

The target profile: EU importers and wholesalers of commercial batteries above 2 kWh.

Key findings

1. Similar fit rates across sources

Live search averaged a 20.3% total fit rate. Apollo produced a 15.3% total fit rate.

The 5.0-point difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.070). Both sources provided acceptable raw candidate accounts.

2. Dead domain rates diverge significantly

One in four domains from Apollo (25.3%) failed to load.

Search produced a significantly lower failure rate of 13.8% (p = 0.00004).

Search queries return pages indexed recently by search engines. Dead sites drop from rankings quickly. Database records persist even when a server goes offline.

3. Almost zero overlap between lists

Only 15 out of 300 companies appeared in both the Apollo list and the search list.

The two methods find different parts of the market. They act as complementary candidate finders.

Why database keywords struggle with specific trade roles

The target profile requires two facts simultaneously:

Apollo's API keyword field (q_organization_keyword_tags) matches ANY tag in the list. It functions as an OR operator.

Adding wholesale to battery returns all wholesalers in the country. It does not return battery wholesalers specifically.

Live search queries support exact Boolean operators. A single search query can require Batterie Großhandel Energiespeicher in one line.

Cost and processing efficiency

Classification compute cost $3.30 for the Apollo batch and $7.30 for the search batch.

Apollo appeared cheaper per qualified account ($0.072 vs $0.114). However, this difference occurred because 25.3% of Apollo domains failed to load before classification.
